Norovirus is one of the leading causes of acute gastroenteritis, often referred to as the “winter vomiting bug.” This highly contagious virus spreads rapidly through contaminated food, water, surfaces, and direct contact with infected individuals. Outbreaks frequently occur in schools, hospitals, cruise ships, and other crowded environments.

What is Norovirus?

Norovirus is a group of viruses, classified into ten genogroups (GI-GX). It causes inflammation in the stomach and intestines, leading to gastroenteritis. It can affect individuals of all ages and is responsible for about 685 million cases and 200,000 deaths globally a year. Unlike bacterial infections, Norovirus is a viral pathogen, making antibiotics ineffective against it.

Symptoms and Prevention

Symptoms typically appear 12-48 hours after exposure and include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, and dehydration. While symptoms are usually resolved within a few days, severe dehydration may require medical attention.

To prevent infection:

  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water
  • Disinfect contaminated surfaces with bleach-based solutions
  • Avoid close contact with infected individuals
  • Cook food properly and wash produce before consumption

The Role of Molecular Diagnostics

Rapid detection is key to controlling Norovirus outbreaks. Real-Time PCR assays are highly sensitive tools and the most used tool in outbreaks for identifying Norovirus in clinical and environmental samples, ensuring timely intervention.

Bosphore Viral GI Panel Kit v1 & v2

Bosphore Viral GI Panel Kit v1 is an in vitro diagnostic Real-Time PCR kit that detects and characterizes the NSP3 gene of Rotavirus and the ORF1-ORF2 junction region genes of Norovirus GI and Norovirus GII in human stool samples. Fluorescence detection is performed using FAM, HEX, Texas RED, and Cy5 filters.

Bosphore Viral GI Panel Kit v2 is a Real-Time PCR kit for in vitro diagnostics that detects and characterizes the genomic materials of Sapovirus (I, II, IV, V), Astrovirus, Rotavirus A, Norovirus GI, Norovirus GII, and Adenovirus from stool samples. Viral DNA/RNA is amplified, and fluorescence detection is performed using the FAM, HEX, and Cy5 filters.

Bosphore Gastroenteritis Panel Kit v1-v4

Bosphore Gastroenteritis Panel Kit v4 detects Sapovirus (I, II, IV, V), Astrovirus, Rotavirus A, Norovirus GI, Norovirus GII, Adenovirus, Clostridium difficile toxin A/B, Campylobacter (C. jejuni, C. upsaliensis, C. coli, C. lari), Salmonella spp.Escherichia coli VTEC (E. coli STEC (STX1/STX2)), Escherichia coli EIEC/ShigellaYersinia enterocoliticaEntamoeba histolyticaCryptosporidium spp.Giardia lambliaEscherichia coli EPEC, Escherichia coli ETEC lt/st, Cyclospora cayetanensisEscherichia coli EAEC, Escherichia coli STEC O157:H7, Plesiomonas shigelloidesVibrio choleraeVibrio parahaemolyticus, and Vibrio vulnificus from stool samples.
